What are your thoughts on tagging along on a TDY?

Back in April my husband got picked up for a two-week class at Peterson AFB in Colorado Springs, and he came home and asked if our daughter and I wanted to tag along. I had never been to Colorado and thought it sounded like fun. So I booked the same flight my husband was scheduled to be on and started researching fun things to do. 

My husband and I believe that anytime it is allowed and we can make it work than we should travel together. Before our daughter came along, I’d flown out to California for a long weekend while he was at a month-long training there, I tagged along for a two-month class in Alabama, and joined him for a week in Las Vegas, where I ending up meeting some of my husband’s peers one of whom is now someone I would consider a close friend. Since having our daughter, her and I have tagged along down to Florida, to Colorado, and most recently out to Ohio. We like having time together, we like traveling together. There have been plenty of TDYs that I could have gone along that didn’t work with our schedule, and that is okay too. We see TDYs as an opportunity to travel as a family, and experience new and exciting places. 

I never thought any differently, until we were in Colorado and one of my husband’s peers had some pretty strong opinions;

“Why would you bring your wife and baby?…You need a break from them…TDY is your chance to get away from them, and relax.”

The peer that had these strong opinions was surprisingly (to me at least) a mother. I was actually offended when my husband told me what she had to say. Why would you choose to spend weeks away from your family, when you have the opportunity to have an adventure together. In my opinion the military forces us apart enough, when we have the chance to spend time together we should. 

What is your opinion of tagging along on TDYs? Are you team #tagalong or #teamstayhome?
