No-Sew Initial Dress

Are you looking or a personalized gift for that new baby in your life, or looking to add a little personal touch to any kids dress? If so than my simple initial dress is for you!

This project is both simple and quick. All you need is a scrap piece of fabric, the dress, shirt or outfit you want to add the personal touch to and some paper backed fusible webbing. I used the paper backed fusible webbing, Wonder Under (affiliate link). I found the simple grey dress at a local craft store, and the piece of fabric was leftover from my DIY Kids Picnic Blanket! You will also need a pencil, a sharp scissors, cutting knife (optional), iron, and damp wash cloth.

First you need to attach the fusible webbing to the back of the scrap piece of fabric. You do this by ironing the fusible webbing texture side against the backside of the fabric piece. Make sure you only iron agains the paper side of the webbing, or you will melt the fusible fabric to the face of your iron!

Once the fabric cools. You want use your pencil and draw or trace the initial you want to create. *Make sure you trace it backwards or else you will end up with a backwards letter to attach to your piece of clothing. I say this because I did this! The one plus side was after I took the paper backing off my letter and realized my mistake I was able to use my finished letter to trace it the correct way!

After you draw or trace the initial I recommend using sharp craft knife to cute out any inside parts before cutting the letter out. If the initial your making doesn’t have an inside you can skip this step! For example, I used the craft knife to cut out the heart in the middle of my “a”.

Then after the center piece is cut out you can use your sharp scissors to cut around the outside of the initial.

Now you remove the paper backing form the fusible webbing and place your initial where you would like it on the piece of clothing you are using. According to the directions for the webbing, you now want to take a clean damp cloth (I always use a white washcloth) place it over your letter and apply heat with your iron for 10-15 seconds at a time until the letter is fused.

The last step is just allow the piece of clothing to dry, and ta-da, a beautiful personalized gift!
